Helmut Baumann (Albin/Zazá), Günter König (Georges), Steve Barton (Jean-Michel) Notes from other traders: Usually circulates as 1986, which is unlikely based on the cast. Almaviva’s notes: Possibly lower generation video as there is no fuzzy line at the bottom compared to the larger version below. The video is a bit on the darker side due to the lighting of the show itself but no spotlight washout; a little shaky at times but good video. Notes from other traders: A great shot! Ramin Karimloo (The Phantom), Sierra Boggess (Christine Daaé), Dean Chisnall (Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny), Liz Robertson (Madame Giry), Summer Strallen (Meg Giry) Notes from other traders: An excellent capture in 16:9 wide-screen of the Original London production, right after the show underwent the changes. Very clear and steady. Filmed from near the back of the theater, but with nice zooms and no obstructions. There was another round of changes made after the above 2011 video. This is definitely the later version because at the end Raoul returns with Gustave and there's no unmasking, which matches the eventual Australian version. A- *NFT* |

MACK AND MABEL
Los Angeles | 1974 (Highlights) | VOBs with smalls | 2.27 GB
Robert Preston (Mack Sennett), Bernadette Peters (Mabel Normand) Notes from other traders: A compilation of home movies of the original production of Mack and Mabel that make up about 80 minutes of footage. It was edited with Don Pippin’s Super8 sound films, mainly of performance excerpts shot from the wings, and Igor Gavin’s rehearsal and backstage footage (he was a grip and Robert Preston’s understudy). First seen is the cast preparing to go out of town for the tryouts, then various rehearsals in studio and at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and at the Kennedy Centre Opera House, lots of fooling around backstage, more studio rehearsals, and finally onstage rehearsals. This is followed by a cast party at Jerry Herman’s house in LA, rehearsals for a special performance at the Hollywood Bowl, more studio rehearsals, and finally performance excerpts seen from the wings. |

Howard McGillin (Mack Sennett), Caroline O’Connor (Mabel Normand), Kathryn Evans (Lottie Ames), Alan Mosley (Mr Fox) Notes from other traders: Filmed from the balcony. Mostly wide shots. C Almaviva’s notes: Some Mack and Mabel footage from the 1974 LA home movies seems to have been added on after the end of the show, but I will have to check and compare. |

Recorded Winter of 1983, shot by one camera on a tripod at the back of the orchestra. One unusual thing about this production is that the conductor faces the audience while conducting the overture. |

Jeremy and Laura give incredible performances, as does Joshua Henry and too many others to name. Jason Robert Brown gives a speech after the curtain call. Truly an epic night of theatre. This is a very near perfect video with no obstruction and only slight washout in wide shots. There are two quick dropouts in the first few minutes, but the concert is otherwise fully captured. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, Jason’s speech, and playbill scans. |

The last production directed by Ken Hill himself. Apparently videos of 2 performances edited into one. Second or third generation, last 2 scenes of the first act heavily damaged by digital glitches. Near the end of the “Ghost’s Allowance” scene the picture starts being interrupted by frames and sounds which are supposed to happen exactly 9 minutes 55 seconds later, this continues until the middle of the rooftop scene after lasting for 9:55 as well. This copy is often mislabelled as being the 1992 cast, but I was contacted by actress Demaree Hill who confirmed the video is actually from 1993 run she was in as Mary and provided the full correct cast list. Almaviva’s notes: Usually credited with Douglas Sills as Neville Craven and can also definitely confirm that it is NOT him in the cast since his distinctive singing and speaking voice does not match here. |

Sydmonton | 5 September 1992 | Proshot | VOBs with smalls | 3.72 GB
Patti LuPone (Norma Desmond), Kevin Anderson (Joe Gillis) Notes from other traders: It’s a proshot. But it’s a very high generation proshot with a massive amount of generation loss and distortion in the picture. The audio’s still OK but not great. Despite stabilisation and colour rebalancing, this still is painful to actually look at if you have any kind of light sensitivity. Act two is better at times, and falls into complete and total dropouts at others. There seems to be two versions of this DVD being traded around. One is the wrong aspect ratio and very grainy and the second one is more clearer and has the right aspect ratio. |

Beautifully filmed. Occasionally dark, and some generational loss. Semi-pro shot using one camera on a tripod. ** Even though this circulates as 1988 San Jose CLO, the video does not appear to be from that production. The San Jose production played January 1989 with Ed Evanko and Jean Stapleton in the roles of Mr and Mrs Lovett.
