COSÌ FAN TUTTE (Mozart)
Royal Opera House | 27 January 1981 | Radio broadcast | MP3 (untracked) | 438.1 MB
Kiri Te Kanawa (Fiordiligi), Agnes Baltsa (Dorabella), Daniela Mazzucato (Despina), Stuart Burrows (Ferrando), Thomas Allen (Guglielmo), Richard Van Allan (Don Alfonso), Colin Davis (conductor)
Almaviva’s notes: Split into five tracks with some minor dropouts during the broadcast. Includes an interview with Kiri Te Kanawa during the intermission.
Lyric Opera of Chicago | 12 December 1987 (Opening Night) | Radio broadcast | MP3 (untracked) | 402.6 MB
Kiri Te Kanawa (Fiordiligi), Anne Howells (Dorabella), Marie McLaughlin (Despina), Jerry Hadley (Ferrando), Alan Titus (Guglielmo), Timothy Nolen (Don Alfonso), John Pritchard (conductor)
Almaviva’s notes: Probably the wildest opera broadcast I’ve listened to. The quality is more like a audience bootleg (though it is indeed a radio broadcast) with the audio lapsing sometimes mid-aria, perhaps when the cassette tape was changed. An excerpt from Borodin’s Prince Igor makes a cameo appearance after Despina’s “In uomini, in soldati” and Alan Titus flubs a line in “Donne mie”. While Kiri Te Kanawa was clearly the main draw, I personally find Marie McLaughlin the standout performer here. Each act is split into three tracks.
